Using Carbon Black over a textured base, this recipe creates a wonderfully textured rustic finish.

For this paint recipe, we walk you through how to use rustic texture to create an aged and rustic finish.

This technique works well with a neutral base - Burmese, Mali, Potters Clay and Tahr work well - and then a darker top coat like Old Espresso, Carbon Black or Clubhouse Grey.

What you will need:

1 - Paint in Potters Clay chalk paint with the Natural Bristle brush. Paint in all directions, loading up the paint to create lots of texture. Paint for full coverage.

2 - Water down the Carbon Black so that it runs off the brush. Using the round synthetic brush, paint a thin coat all over in all directions.

3 - Once dry, sand using 240 grit sandpaper to bring the base colour through. Having the texture underneath will help 'knock' the black back to easily create a distressed finish.

4 - Make a coloured wax using Carbon Black chalk paint and Clear wax, using a 1:1 ratio. Brush on with a natural bristle brush and wipe off excess with a rag.

5 - Use Dark Wax to create low lights in carved details, around handles, on the feet, etc.

6 - Optional: Detail the edges with Gold gilding wax, using either a finger or a detail brush.
