In this recipe we show you how to create an elegantly aged finish using coloured waxes.
Coloured waxes are the star of the show here, turning a subtle grey into a timeless aged finish.
This technique works well with the light to mid-tone greys. This recipe uses Imperial Linen but Rivers Peak, Calicut and Parisian Grey would all work well too.
What you will need:
- Imperial Linen Chalk Paint
- Stormy Creek Chalk Paint
- Tahr Chalk Paint
- Duck Egg Chalk Paint
- Clear Wax
- Natural Bristle Brush
- Pro-Hybrid Round Synthetic Brush
- Optional: Forgotten Gold Gilding Wax
1 - Paint in Imperial Linen chalk paint for full coverage using your round synthetic brush. Paint in large crosses to create subtle texture.
2 - Make a coloured wax using Tahr chalk paint and Clear wax, using a 1:2 (wax to paint) ratio. Brush on all over with a natural bristle brush and wipe off excess with a rag.
3 - Make a coloured Wax using Stormy Creek chalk paint. This time use a 1:1 ratio. Apply the Stormy creek coloured wax to areas you want to have as low lights. Eg. in carved details, around feet or handles, anywhere that would potentially have more age. Brush on with your natural bristle brush and wipe the excess off.
4 - Make a coloured wax using Duck Egg chalk paint, again in a 1:1 ratio. Use this sparingly to create movement in your finish. You may use it around one section of a drawer front or some of the carved details, just remember that you don't want it to be too uniform in placement. Brush on with your natural bristle brush and wipe the excess off.
5 - Optional: Detail the edges with Gold gilding wax, using either a finger or a detail brush.
