This gorgeous vintage writing desk has been given a modern makeover for an eight-year-old boy.

Wanting to add a bit of colour to his room and to cover up the wear and tear on the front panel and inside, he chose Forget Me Not - a lovely bright blue which offers a great contrast to the darker oak.

We used regular chalk paint for this project as we had an open can, however, Velvet Luxe Chalk Paint would be ideal, especially for the inside as it is extremely durable and gives a nice flat finish.

Technique:

After cleaning and taping the areas where we did not want paint, we used our Staalmeester brush to paint two coats on the outside areas, we didn't want added texture so made sure to keep our brush wet and gently sanded between coats.

For the inside, we used a flat brush and an artists brush to cut in and a roller for the flat areas as it allowed for more reach. We had a bit of bleed through on the inside, between coats we covered the spots with a coat of lacquer.

Once dry, we sealed both the inside and outside with clear wax using our natural bristle brush and a lint-free rag. We then buffed the unpainted wood with fine steel wool and dark wax, this deepened the wood finish and gave it some much-needed conditioning.

Products used:

This was originally painted in Vintro paints but we have updated the colours below
for The Artisan Company premium paint range.
