These old bentwood chairs have been given a new lease of life with pastel colours using Premium Chalk Paint!

Painting old dining chairs is not only a great way to use chairs that have seen better days but it's also a great way to add some colour and personality into a dining room. This customer wanted the same shape chair (a classic bentwood) painted in different pastel shades, however, you could also have mismatched wood chairs that are painted in the same colour to unify them.

The seats of these chairs aren't the best visually (although they're still solid) so we decided that as you don't normally see the seat (as they're under the table or being sat on), that it wasn't cost effective to replace them. When buying old furniture it is always worthwhile thinking about what you can repair and what is important to you, this could be shape, size, having a matching set etc.

Technique:

We used three different colours for these chairs. Bright Buttercup (yellow - toned down with Crisp White), Forget Me Not (blue) and Berry Nude (pink - toned down with Crisp White). By mixing Crisp White into our base colours we were able to achieve three colours that were in the same tonal family.

We painted two coats of each colour using our Staalmeester Pro-Hybrid brush. For the yellow we also did a couple of touch ups where there wasn't perfect coverage. We then gently distressed using 240 grit sandpaper along the edges and in places where there would be natural wear. We then finished with Clear Wax using our natural bristle brush.

Products used:

This was originally painted in Vintro paints but we have updated the colours below
for The Artisan Company premium paint range.
