This big chest of drawers has been given a new lease of life with premium chalk paint!
This belonged to our customer and while it looked good from afar, it was tired and had its share of wear. A bit too dark now, we decided to lighten it up with pale greys and then create interest with coloured waxes which also highlighted the beautiful features.
We love how this came out and now it can keep being used for years to come.
Technique:
Painted all over in Sea Mist, our palest grey, we painted for full coverage and created some texture by painting in large crosses.
We did have some pretty bad bleed through, so after the first coat of Sea Mist we applied two coats of lacquer to lock that in before continuing to paint.
Next we used Parisian Grey around the top and bottom edges and on the side column's. This was to ground the piece and bring the eye to the interesting details. We lightly sanded these back to show some of the Sea Mist coming through.
We then Clear waxed the entire piece to seal it in. This enabled us to have more time to play with the coloured waxes as we didn't want them to be too strong or overpowering.
Next we made a Clubhouse Grey coloured wax using a one part chalk paint to one part clear wax ratio. We brushed this on all over, wiping the excess away but allowing it to stay darker in the carved sections.
We then added some dark wax, concentrating this around the carved details, handles and keyholes. We also used it around the sides and drawer fronts to create a framed effect. We did not apply this to the top.
Finally, we took a clean rag and buffed the top to give it a bit of shine which contrasts beautifully with the rustic front and sides.
