This solid wood shelving unit has been updated for our customer's spare room. Wanting to add texture and colour to the room, we decided to use Gretels Forest, a wonderful deep forest green, with a touch of Peony showing through. We added Efex moulds to add character to the very modern and square unit and then used gold and dark wax to highlight.

The unit has been completely transformed and will now sit nicely in the updated spare room.

Technique:

We used Efex moulds L5 on the front legs and T19, a bead trim, for the front and sides. Once we had decided on placement, we drew an outline of the moulds and then painted contact adhesive on both the wood unit and the latex mould. Following the manufacturer's directions, after 15 minutes we placed the latex moulds onto the unit and let dry.

Once the moulds were applied we painted Peony on areas where we wanted to distress. We used the chalk paint straight from the can and painted with texture. Once dry we used clear wax to seal, when distressing the clear wax acts as a barrier to stop from distressing straight through to the wood.

Once the wax was dry we then painted the entire piece (including the latex moulds) in Gretels Forest. We painted with texture on the flat surfaces and watered down our second coat to achieve full coverage.

Once dry, we used a small artists brush to dry-brush Classic Gold metallic creme on the latex moulds to add extra depth. We then used our 240 grit sandpaper to lightly distress the entire unit, focusing on the edges where it would naturally wear.

When we were happy with the distressing we sealed with dark wax. We love how the dark wax got into the moulds and created an aged gold effect. We used fine steel wool to pull back the dark wax in places to create depth and highlights.

This was originally painted in Vintro paints but we have updated the colours below
