A French Provincial, softly aged and rustic finish.

For this paint recipe, we walk you through how to create a French Provincial look using layers of wax to create age and depth.

This technique works really well with whites like we've used in the example. Or use a pale blue or green to create a similar feel, Aurora or Verdant would work well as base colours, keeping the same coloured waxes on top.

What you will need:

  • Champagne Waltz Chalk Paint
  • Pearl Chalk Paint
  • Clear Wax
  • Dark Wax
  • Gold Gilding Wax
  • Natural Bristle Brush
  • Pro-Hybrid Synthetic Brush

1 - Paint in Champagne Waltz using a pro-hybrid round synthetic brush. Paint in large crosses to create subtle texture.

2 - Paint a second coat for full coverage, adding 5% water.

3 - Using a natural bristle brush, apply dark wax, wiping off excess with a lint-free rag.

4 - Create a coloured wax using Pearl chalk paint and Clear wax. Combine paint and wax in a 1:1 ratio. Brush on with a natural bristle brush and wipe off excess with a rag. Think about areas that you want to highlight and others that you want to stay darker.

5 - Optional: use gold gilding wax to highlight edges and details.
