The Block NZ Week 1

Do you watch The Block NZ? It started on Sunday and this year the four teams are finishing four newbuild townhouses in Hobsonville Point, Auckland. This year I hope the teams push the boundaries and I really hope they use a mix of old and new to furnish the homes!

The teams started straight in on their guest bedrooms and were each given a theme, so I thought I'd share what I would love to do!

Team Yellow - Amy & Stu - Moody Botanical

I absolutely love this theme. It's very on trend and can easily be done on a budget.

  •  A large print floral wallpaper on the wall behind the bed will create instant impact
  • Alternatively, dark grey walls will also create the moody vibe
  • Pale millennial or blush pink bedding will brighten the room and add a luxurious feel
  • Vintage painted and distressed furniture will add texture and character to the room; a great example would be a white 'shabby chic' dresser or small table
  • Lots of plants and in-season flowers! A grouping of plants gives more of an impact than one by itself and having them at different heights gives more visual interest.

Team Orange - Claire & Agni - Desert Chic

This theme is great for staging a home for sale. Bright, modern and with clean lines, it will allow them to keep the bones of the room neutral while using decor pieces to show its full potential.

  • Think a toned down Moroccan palate or desert Arizona
  • Bright white walls are a great base
  • Tan leather, rattan and aged wood add texture and warmth while keeping a muted palate
  • Cacti add greenery while keeping the desert theme, they also add lots of texture as they come in many different shapes
  • Adding a pop of colour with a painted piece of furniture gives interest and warmth. The above yellow dresser is a great example, other colours could include a warm blush pink or a green that is similar in tone to your chosen cactus.

Team Blue - Ben & Tom - Coastal Retreat

This is a classic theme that is well suited for Hobsonville Point as it's so close to the harbour. Bright and airy, this theme appeals to a large range of buyers.

  • Update this classic theme with a modern palette of muted blues and warm whites
  • Vertical shiplap on the walls give a beach cottage feel while adding texture, they also draw the eye upwards which make rooms feel bigger
  • Use natural elements such as vintage wood, linen and greenery
  • A statement piece of painted furniture, like the above muted blue wardrobe, will give interest to the room
  • Candles and plenty of cushions give that retreat feel.

Team Purple - Chlo & Em - Peacock Blue Luxe

This is the most out there theme of the four. It's a great chance for the girls to play with colour and texture. However they run the risk of creating a room that may not fit with the rest of the house, this is one of my biggest annoyances with the themed rooms!

  • Use luxurious fabrics and materials for this theme
  • Velvet bed heads, gold lamps, gilt mirrors and side tables
  • Emerald green and peacock blue are the go-to colours, however as this is for staging a room I would introduce colour through art and furnishings
  • A stylish and highly glossed piece of painted furniture is a great way to add colour and drama
  • This is the perfect theme to embrace your inner maximalist!

I can't wait to see how the teams interpret their themes in the first room reveal on Sunday!
